I recently attended a training about how to mathematize picture books, so that all students can feel successful in math and it has made a huge difference in my class. Moving to a new grade level next year, I hope to start the school year with this practice, so that my students can benefit from these opportunities all year. All students can be mathematicians and scientists, and using read alouds in math and science are great ways to encourage that mindset! By connecting students' metacognition in literacy, to what we are learning in math and science, it allows students with strengths in all areas to create new learning and internalize new information. It also encourages students to make connections across curriculum areas, making the understanding more concrete and related to real life!
