The AVID elective class takes students that are likely to fall into the achievement gap and gives them the tools that will help to catapult them into the successful futures they deserve. WICOR strategies provide the framework for the AVID curriculum. Each letter in this acronym comprises one of the tools we commit to teaching the AVID students. The "O" in the WICOR acronym focuses on the need for organization in order to be successful at anything we aspire to. The AVID elective, therefore, requires students to be highly organized and carry a large binder with them to all of their classes that maintains organization for all of their core academic classes.
The AVID binder is often our students' most prized possession, and they are proud to show how hard they have worked to establish, maintain, and commit to organization as a reflection of their commitment to their futures. This binder is the heart of the AVID organizational system and is checked weekly for consistent organization of materials. However, many students struggle to purchase these binders and/or have their binders fall apart from wear and tear. The types of materials selected for this project reflect the need for binders and the types of reinforcements necessary to maintain this organizational tool throughout the school year.
