My first grade students thrive when hands-on materials are provided. The best way way to keep a student focused is to ask them to build or show their thinking. The students will use individual kits to show their thinking about place value and fractions, while I model with the teacher kit on the magnetic white board. Focused and engaged students want to participate. Behavior improves and students learn to love learning. These kits are colorful, durable and interesting. They are just what my students need to get more excited about math.
