Students who have input into their own academics are more likely to work hard, take ownership of their learning, and experience joy in the classroom. Having academic choice gives students power over their own education. Something as simple as a choice of medium to use when showing learning or where to sit while doing an activity allows students autonomy in the learning process. Choosing between two activities that foster the same skill ensures that students remain engaged and connected with their learning. Would you rather write your math facts on a dry erase board or on the windows? Would you prefer to write a book about your topic or create a model with Play Doh? Do you like to sit at your desk or on the floor? Every learner is different!
