Research shows that childhood trauma causes individuals to have a harder time controlling their impulses and making rational decisions because of actual physical changes that occur in the development of their brains. Because of childhood histories, my students require extra support during their time at school. Regardless of their specific disabilities, most of my students suffer from anxiety, and a lack of self-regulation skills. Many students become overwhelmed by the chaos and pressure of a high school, and need a "time out" to de-escalate and collect themselves in order to return to their class setting. I am trying to create a calm area that students can use when their brains can't handle anymore stimulation. The area will be in my office for use during crisis situations and regular therapy sessions.
