Our vision at our elementary school is to create an environment, "Camp Learning - The Oral Language Lab", that will provide students with the opportunity to be immersed in purposeful play each day. The oral language lab will service our PPCD, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, as well as our bilingual and ESL students, and will consist of the dramatic play, blocks, storytelling, science exploration, and art stations. The materials requested in this grant will provide 18 hands-on, engaging dramatic play stations that will be used throughout the entire school year. Due to the high quality of the materials, they will be able to be used for many years to come. I chose materials that align with a curriculum resource that was created specifically for early childhood learners with not only oral language in mind but also literacy immersion and social skills development. Every two weeks the dramatic play center will function as a replica of a real life community setting. A doctor's office, a grocery store, a bakery, a veterinarian's office, just to name a few. In the bakery, for example, students will choose their role - baker, customer, cashier, or waitress. Students will practice greeting each other, ordering from a menu, setting the table, serving a customer, and paying for their order all in an authentic setting. This will build vocabulary, teach students how to work together, and allow students to learn through imaginary play - a simple childhood pleasure that has been almost forgotten. My hope it to create an environment where language and learning flourish!
