From the very first moment I handed out a strawberry-scented sticker, the classroom atmosphere lit up—literally and figuratively. Students were not only excited to earn a sticker, but they also began to take more pride in their work, show increased cooperation with peers, and demonstrate more consistent kindness and attentiveness.\r\n\r\nSmelly stickers became a positive reinforcement system that was easy to manage and incredibly effective. Whether it was the promise of earning a grape-scented badge for helping a classmate, or a watermelon sticker for completing a challenging task, students were eager to engage and do their best.\r\n\r\nThe stickers also encouraged communication and connection. Children shared scents, compared their collections, and even traded stickers, practicing both social and negotiation skills. The classroom transformed into a space of shared celebration, where achievements—big or small—were recognized with excitement and encouragement.\r\n\r\nWhat I love most is how this tiny incentive helped foster a sense of community, pride, and positivity. Tucked into a quiet part of the room, it's filled with soft cushions, stuffed animals, emotion charts, and sensory items like stress balls and textured toys. This cozy space offers students a safe and inviting place to go when they're feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or just need a moment to reset.\r\n\r\nWe've noticed a huge difference since introducing it. Students are beginning to recognize when they need a break and will quietly let the teacher know or simply head to the calming corner on their own. It's encouraging to see them develop that kind of self-awareness and independence at such a young age.\r\n\r\nThe calming corner also helps reduce classroom disruptions. Instead of acting out, students now have a structured, positive outlet for managing their feelings. It keeps the rest of the class on track and creates a calmer, more focused environment overall.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, it's helping to build a classroom culture where emotions are acknowledged and supported. Students know it's okay to feel upset sometimes, and they have a place to go where they feel safe and cared for. It's been a small addition with a big impact.","fullyFundedDate":1704997390547,"projectUrl":"project/a-safe-space/8092697/","projectTitle":"A Safe Space","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Harris-Guerrero","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8678833_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1764691682388","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8678833"},{"teacherId":3558759,"projectId":8834282,"letterContent":"Starting the new year with new releases and new books was an easy hook to get students to keep my students reading.
