Accessing educational activities is a must for our young learners. In general, preschoolers need their motor and sensory needs met throughout the day, and preschoolers who qualify for special education services frequently have even more extensive needs in order to fully participate in the school day. Our kiddos will use these supplies to help them address their need to wiggle, explore, and play through functional and non-disruptive avenues such as bouncing their feet on a Bouncy Band while seated at the table or sitting with a cushion in their chairs during group activities. Fidgets help keep busy hands occupied so preschoolers can focus on the activity at hand, and weighted lap pads and vests provide input to help calm little ones who need some help understanding where their bodies are in space. Each of the items selected for this project meets a specific need from chewy tubes to provide appropriate oral motor sensory input to noise cancelling headphones to help students exit the building calmly and safely during safety drills. Not only are these items integral to the students currently on our caseloads, but they have been chosen to meet a wide variety of common needs in order to be functional for many years in our classrooms. We have selected materials that are durable, easy to use, and useful in multiple school settings. One of our guiding goals as early childhood special education teachers is to allow our students the greatest degree of access to general education preschool learning objectives as described in The Virginia foundation Blocks for Early Learners. By addressing the sensory needs of our students, we are better able to allow them to participate in educational activities, gain independence, and interact with one another appropriately.
