The best part of working with middle schoolers is that they fluctuate from wanting to express their independence and act like mature adults, while simultaneously looking for the attention and care one would give to a young child. They are silly and smart, kind and kooky. They are thoughtful and spontaneous. Needless to say, there's never a dull moment in most middle school classrooms, especially mine. I try to match their enthusiasm and energy, while also introducing them to important issues that I believe will make them better students, kinder individuals, and more thoughtful members of society. While many of my students have obstacles in their personal lives that I cannot begin to fathom, they come to school ready to learn and willing to grow. I encourage them to reflect on these experiences, particularly in their writing, to empower them and understand how to use life's setbacks as a means to create change.
