For many struggling students, especially those who are more than one grade level behind in either math or reading, the use of manipulatives in class can greatly boost their understanding of new and difficult concepts. Students will use their hands to create connections between what they are reading, and what they must do to accomplish each task. The items requested in this project will allow my students an alternative way to access grade level curriculum. By providing these students with base ten blocks, pattern blocks for geometry, and magnetic fraction tiles, students will get a visual representation that will help solidify abstract mathematical concepts. By utilizing magnetic letters, students struggling with the basics of the English language can manipulate letters to create, read, and understand word parts, word blends, entire words, and eventually, can create their own sentences. This will help my students to learn the language using more than just one method. Studies have shown that using hands-on materials stimulates the learning part of the brain. For this unique group of students, being given the ability to work constructively and with hands-on materials will allow them to access the new material in a way that makes sense to them, while building new pathways in their learning.
