Our special needs students are educated in a separate classroom that is housed within an IB Magnet School. When possible, students are integrated into classrooms (PE, dance, computer) with their typically developing peers. When in our classroom each student receives instruction that has been modified to his/her cognitive level. Age appropriate reading materials are prized. Of our nine students, six suffer from seizure disorders. It is therefore of special importance that our classroom be kept quiet, orderly, and calm. Often seizures can be prevented or their severity can be minimized if the student is allowed to relax at the very first sign. Our classroom, today, is typically furnished with durable desks, tables, and bookshelves that are made of wood, plastic, and steel. Students would benefit from having an area where the furniture is soft and close to the ground. This will provide a safe area in case a student has a seizure, and a quite reading area at other times.
