Natural spaces offer health and wellness benefits as well as continual learning experiences for all ages. Through the creation of a Citizen Science garden and learning kits, students will remain engaged with the garden and its wildlife even after the design process and creation stages are over. By providing kits filled with observational tools, such as wildlife pocket guides, binoculars, and magnifiers, teachers will have a framework for easier class participation in collecting wildlife data. This initiative will not only benefit the students involved in the design and creation of the garden and educational materials, but also students from other district schools, parents, and the community at large. This garden will complement the native courtyard garden used mainly by the school population and is parallel to green projects at other local schools including native pollinator and rain gardens. All of these projects support the town’s green status and move the community to more environmental awareness and engagement.
