In preschool, a sandbox is a tactile space that can be a construction zone, a restaurant, a prehistoric dinosaur habitat, and so much more. Children explore with their hands and become practiced and digging, scooping measuring, packing and sculpting, as well as collaborating and using their imaginations. It provides a good space for practicing safety skills and learning to accept the impermanence of their creations. Ideally, it would be able to accommodate a large group of children. A visit from our state preschool program analyst revealed that our current sandbox is too small, and insufficient. I am noticing that my young students seem to have a natural urge to dig...our mostly dirt play yard is becoming pocked with holes. It would be nice to have a sandbox for them that could accommodate more than 2 children at a time. We have a small collection of sandbox toys, dump trucks and diggers that would appreciated an upgraded home as well.
