My students need more hands-on activities to learn and practice letters, sounds, sight words, and new words through word work. Using a variety of materials and resources will help them become better readers and writers. I have already used sand spelling as a word work option. Colored sand is in a metal tray where students can use their finger to spell and write words. It has been an absolute hit! They love it and ask to use it often. I want to give them more choices to motivate them to want to practice their words. Choice drives motivation. They will have choices on which materials they want to use. They will have the choice to manipulate play dough into letters, use letter stamps, bendable wikisticks, string letter beads, write with gel pens and smelly makers, and move around magnetic letters and tiles. With the use of storage bins, which the students will call "work word bins", their little hands will easily be able to take the bin with the desired activity and practice their word work. This will promote independence and help keep the activities organized, readily available, and easily accessible for all learners. My students will be thrilled and motivated to create and learn new words in so many different ways! Thank you for supporting hands-on learning in my classroom!
