My students love doing hands on labs where they can actually produce an editable product. Last year my students were able to make to make ice cream in zip locks bags they were excited watching mike and sugar turn in to ice cream. The great thing about this lab was it made them question the chemistry behind the experiment. I believe students benefit more form hands on applications. This is why I hope to start a kitchen chemistry class. Students will be able to learn the chemistry behind food, while learning to cook breads, candy and chocolate. This class will not only introduce them to topics in chemistry biology, it will introduce them to fundaments of cooking. This class will also help them in math, as they will have to learn how to convert measurements to measure ingredients. Students will learn useful and hands on applications of chemistry, math, and biology through these experiments. They will also be able to eat and share their products.
