First and foremost is putting a good chapter book in each of my student's hands. Modeling good literacy skills is the purpose of the classroom read-aloud. By having all students hold the copy of our read-aloud text, each child can interact with the text. They see and hear vocabulary that may be new to them. During the reading, portions of the text can be emphasized with a reread. Struggling readers can have access to material that they cannot read to themselves. Writing comes from reading, and reading a good book helps my students become better writers. My students are more engaged when they each have their own copy of a book in their hands during our read-aloud. If at some point we revisit distant learning, my students can join in on a Google Meet and a digital novel response activity. In class, the buzzers keep students excited about responding to questions and working with their team. Lastly, my choice for all of my students to read Wonder is because when you get lost in a book, you feel a connection with the characters and their lives. Wonder is a story of kindness and courage through anti-bullying, having compassion, accepting others, and showing empathy. While my class is over the top kind, reading about a character's struggles will give them the chance to feel and think in new and different ways.
