The book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson had me in tears. I want my students to not only understand that people are not always in control of their own future outcomes, but also to see, and to answer, the call to action made in this book. My high school students are both wrapped up in their own cell phone worlds and unconvinced that they can make a difference in this world. This book forces the reader to feel compassion and the urge to act. We will read the book in order to study rhetorical strategies, discuss issues in today's society, and consider ways to participate in prison reform conversations.
