I transitioned to a "deskless" classroom two years ago and my students have embraced change from a traditional classroom to a flexible seating environment. This style of classrooms affords students the opportunity to work both individually and collaboratively in different seat settings. It also creates a more welcoming environment as students are able to choose what is most comfortable. With class sizes ever changing, using a flexible seating arrangement rather than desks in groups or rows allows students to move around the room with ease. Students in my class are able to choose from a variety of seating options. Currently we have a couch, a coffee table with pillows for seating, stools at our group table, group tables with crate seats, and pillows or beanbags for additional floor seating. We do have a few desks still in our room but it my hope that through funding, we can add additional flexible seating options as well as update some of the things we already have. Using this style of seating in the classroom makes adding additional seating or rotating students around the room more manageable.
