My lovelies and I often discuss that there is no singular way to thrive; they will each do so in a way that is unique to them. Their definitions of thriving all share one thing in common, though: my lovelies intend to create change in the world. Reading "Raw Wounds" will help prepare my students to create this change. This book is essentially a social commentary, noting the factors that perpetuate oppression and privilege in our society. Because Fidel writes in youth-friendly language, these nuanced concepts will be made accessible to my lovelies. In other words, "Raw Wounds" creates an opportunity for them to engage in meaningful reflection, conversation, and ultimately action--not just about how the world impacts them, but how they can impact the world. I have designed a cross-disciplinary unit centered around "Raw Wounds." As we read Fidel's book, the lovelies will also read supplementary articles about both current and historical events. They will have various opportunities to react to what we read through discussion, writing, and art. One of their most in-depth assignments will be a critique of their community, and a subsequent action plan of steps they will personally take to change it. I am excited and hopeful about the potential of this unit, but none of it can happen without a class set of "Raw Wounds." I truly believe this will help prepare my students not only to succeed, but to thrive.
