I have many students who are squirmy by nature. They desire to do well, but often get easily distracted and have the need to be moving. If they had access to flexible seating opportunities- yoga balls, stools, standing desks, etc- they would be able to move while still learning.
Studies show that the ability to move greatly aids students in their ability to focus and concentrate. Ultimately through that focus and concentration, they will be able to learn more!
For students that are not wiggly, flexible seating still allows them to take more ownership of their work space as they are given the option of which chair they would like to use for the day.
My vision is that when students come in the morning they will choose which type of chair they will work best in that day- yoga ball, wobble stool, tall stool, or traditional chair. Each day they will have the opportunity to switch if they would like to. I have seen first hand in my school other classrooms that use flexible seating and the results are wonderful! The students in those classrooms tend to be more focused and try harder on the work they are doing. This also helps with behavioral issues as it helps get some energy out and eliminate boredom that can occur when students lose their focus.
These seats will help my class this year- and in years to come!
