Reading is so important in the lives of elementary school students. All subjects are tied to reading. Science, social studies, writing, are all connected and flourish through a good foundation in reading One way to spark their interest in reading is through the use of read alouds. These shared texts allow for collaboration, and thought provoking discussions. As a class, we share excitement, suspense, emotions. ideas and fun of reading about the same book. We recently finished Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry, and the students were on the edge of their seats after each chapter. My hope for this project is to enhance classroom instruction and academic achievement through reading these shared texts in my classroom. By allowing each student to follow along in their own copy of the text, they will be able to cite specific pages and passages when discussing the text in small groups or as a whole class. Having the text in their hands also appeals to my visual learners as they can follow along more easily than viewing the text under the document camera.
