Research greatly supports the need for sensory/gross motor exercise to increase strength, endurance, core, sensory, social and emotional regulation, attention, focus and memory. Exercise is an evidenced based practice for students with autism. My students have sensory and movement breaks throughout their day. They also have a gross motor time built into their daily schedule work on motor skills, team building, and social skills. Our classrooms have grown with the number of students and needs. We have very limited equipment and long indoor winters approaching! We would love to be able to add and rotate in a variety of games and equipment that will meet the needs of our students, as well as increase engagement. With these additions, they will have a wide selection of motor activities to participate in during sensory and gross motor sessions! Some activities we are requesting include giant cardboard blocks so students can use their full body to build, stepping buckets and logs so students can improve their balance and complete obstacle courses, and giant games such as Giant Tic-Tac-Toe and Giant Kerplunk where students can stand and build motor and social skills while playing with peers.
