Learning about animal life cycles and hatching chickens is one of the most memorable moments for kindergarten students. Researching, reading books, making posters and looking at photographs about the life cycle of a chicken is informational, but it is so much more exciting to have real eggs incubating in the classroom! Each year, I rent an incubator and all of the materials needed to help the chickens hatch from their eggs. These well-used incubators are not always reliable and often result in subpar hatching rates. Having our own incubator that we could care for would allow the students to experience the hatching of a greater number of healthy chicks. Seeing my students' excitement as the chicks begin to hatch is one of the most memorable moments throughout the whole year. The kiddos ask to check on the eggs daily, even though there isn't a visual difference in the egg until the chick is ready to hatch. Having the exploration egg set would allow the students to visualize the development that is occurring inside the eggs daily.
