Learning business and marketing terms can be really boring in a common, lecture classroom. Catan is a fun way for students to learn business and marketing terms and ideas. Students will play Catan in small groups, while they trade for resources, build communities, and try to outwit the competition. At the end of the class period we discuss what they learned and how it applied to our previous learning in business and marketing. Catan specifically teaches students about the economic systems, supply and demand, scarcity, trade, opportunity cost, and economic resources. In our classroom we learn the terms, but more importantly we want to see them in action. This game is based on trading and building on economic resources. The resources create supply and demand, and often there is a scarcity. Students understand all of this much more when they can put it into "play."
