Learning letter names and sounds in kindergarten is a critical step to reading success. Some students have a very difficult time with this and require repeated practice. If the practice time is fun and engaging, students will be excited about the skills group rotations. They will stay focused and will have much higher rates of success. Using things that kindergarten students are naturally interested in, like rockets and keys, keeps them on task and excited about learning. Using the Lakeshore Learning Rockets, students will match uppercase and lower case letters. They will also identify the initial sounds that match the pictures. Alphabet Learning Locks allow students positive reinforcement as they use a lowercase key to open a lock that has a corresponding uppercase lock. The Magnetic Alphabet Maze matches uppercase and lower case letters in a very fun maze. Letter Crayons Word Building Centers allow students to spell and build CVC words using letters in the shape of crayons that they will then put in crayon boxes. Having playful activities makes all the difference for these students as they need many repetitions of critical kindergarten skills.
