All students deserve to see themselves in books. This project will allow me to add inclusive, high interest books to my fourth grade classroom library. Research proves that the two most powerful instructional design factors for improving reading motivation and comprehension are student access to many books and personal choice of what to read (Allington). My goal is to add as many books as possible, with special attention to adding inclusive, high interest texts so that my students are both excited and motivated to read. Additionally, I know many upper elementary students are very interested in reading graphic novels, and I would like to incorporate more of this format into our classroom library. I encourage you to view the infographic, "Diversity in Children's Books 2018," if you have not yet already, which is a strong representation of "the low quantity of existing literature, but also the inaccuracy and uneven quality of some of those books." This info-graphic has truly encouraged me to further examine my classroom library through many different lenses, and I need your help to change where it is lacking. I incorporate independent reading time each day, and I also always allow students to take our classroom library books home. With the hybrid structure my district is using this year, it will be essential that I have a large number of books so that students always have access to books they want to read--whether we are at school or reading from home. I sincerely thank you for your consideration and support!
