As a brand-new teacher, I have been a little shocked to enter this profession and find that classrooms look the exact same as when I was in second grade! Students are expected to sit in hard chairs and use broken or worn-down desks all day long. I have recently discovered that my students need to be learning in an environment that works for them. They need a space that reflects their personalities. Here are some things we know about kids: they are mobile, they have LOTS of energy, and they have limitless potential! The stools, wobble boards, and yoga balls I have chosen in this classroom make-over all allow for kids to move while focusing on schoolwork. The stools are 14 inches tall and have a convex surface on the bottom. Students can move in a way that allows them to focus without being interrupted. These stools also have incredible physical benefits: posture and core strength will be improved. Wobble boards function in a very similar way. These boards support the student with a flat surface for their feet. Similar to the stools, the wobble boards have a convex surface on the bottom that allows gentle movement while using a standing desk. Kids who are more comfortable upright can work this way! Finally, students LOVE to kick back in a comfortable spot (bean bag chair!) and read a good book. I have already purchased yoga balls and have implemented them in our classroom and seen incredible results. I have also had the chance to watch other classrooms at my school use these tools and the change they bring is well worth it! Learning is vital.
