At the beginning of this school year I decided to get rid of the desks and scoured the building for unwanted tables. I wanted my students to sit in groups and I embraced the positive results from collaboration in a social setting. Students pick their own seats.... every day! They can sit where they feel they'll have their best learning experiences. They can change their seats throughout the day. There are some boundaries, for example, they have to be productive and on task. But there are lots of choices to motivate learning. Students focus when they can move. Currently the seats students sit in are their tables are basic school chairs. I have a couple of "comfy" chairs that students share. I am hoping to provide more students with a variety of choices for their seating. If they need to rock they can. If they need to bounce they can. If they need to engage their core, move their feet, snuggle up, they can. A variety of seating options will help all the learners in my classroom learn at their most productive seating style.
