Brain research confirms that physical activity - moving, stretching, and walking - can actually enhance the learning process. Year after year I see students who struggle to work in the usual required desk, such as sitting still when they want to stand or move their feet. They need options to stand, move, and sit that will help them to be better learners. A cycling workstation and standing desks will help my students who are constantly feeling the need to move their feet have a focused place in which to contain the movement while still doing assignments. The movement chairs and saddle stools will allow students to also move without disturbing those around them. The different levels and styles of chairs allow students to choose options where they can do their best work. "Teachers need to engage students in a greater variety of postures, including walking, lying down, moving, leaning against a wall or desk, perching or even squatting." (Eric Jensen 2000 Moving with the Brain in Mind) My students are understanding the importance of being in charge of their learning, and flexible seating is the next step in the mindful learning process and the freedom of choice that students need.
