Our school has never had a sensory room before! We are so excited that our renovated building has a sensory space for us this year and we believe the items in this grant will allow us to educate and empower our entire school population. Our first goal is to educate. Students, teachers, and parents will further their understanding of sensory systems and how an environment can shape learning and behavior. There is no average brain and the Theory of Sensory Integration applies to everyone! Staff and students will use the tools and activities provided by this grant to help students to identify their specific sensory needs and apply sensory tools to improve their self-regulation. Our second goal is to use the Sensory Room as a tool to empower our students to stay focused and productive. We believe students are more successful when they have a space and the tools that can meet their individual sensory needs. The items in this grant will allow our team to create a welcoming, calming space that students can use when they need a break from the general classroom, as well as students that need help transitioning between classes. The items in our grant will also allow our school to generalize the self-regulation tools to other environments and settings so that students can participate more fully and be more productive at school.
