As the school year rolled into 2017, my students were invited to the Qualcomm Innovation Station at our local library. This was an amazing experience for my class. It allowed my students to explore their strengths, interests, values, potential careers, and participate in project-based learning with a STEAM focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). A majority of my class showed strengths in the areas of flexibility (collaboration) and analytical thinking. While there, my class created a human circuit and a Robocraft, which they programmed using an Arduino, servo, circuitry, and simple coding skills. They loved this project! They had to work together, be flexible, problem solve and perservere. After our visit to the Innovation Station, I had an epiphany - I had to change my approach to teaching the 21st century child. I realized that my students NEED a different style of teaching and learning that supports their strengths and interests. As a teacher I NEED to teach my students how to be successful for careers of the future. Unfortunately, our education system has not kept up with the demands of the 21st century. Schools do not have cutting edge technology or curriculum that allows students to work through their best modality. There is still a rigidity to the classroom environment that doesn't lend itself to creative thinking and collaboration. I want my students to work collaboratively on STEAM projects using Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, and other robotics materials. I want to be excited about what I teach my students and I want them to be excited about learning. Please help me make this dream a reality.
