Exposure to different genres will enhance their literary background. The City of Ember is the first book in the Ember series. This adventure book about two friends has the potential to hook the students and motivate them to take the ride into the other books in the storyline By choosing a historical novel that ties to their World Cultures studies, the students will be able to truly understand the people that make up that culture. When reading about children close to their age in other cultures and time periods, the reading experience is further magnified and empathy and tolerance can be achieved.
