My classroom consists of students with learning disabilities in a special education setting. Many are at risk of not graduating from high school, and if they did graduate, they would be the first in their family to earn a high school diploma. In my classroom, over 50% of the students are of Hispanic backgrounds and other cultures represented are Russian, Native American, White, and Mixed. Ages range from freshman to senior students with special needs in the areas of math, reading, and written language. Many of my students are from low income families (over 75% free and reduced lunch school wide) and migrant designation. Only 58% graduate from this high school, and from my classes this number is less than 30% that graduate. Some of my students struggle with difficult home lives, addictions, and abuse while others are trying to escape gang influences. Education is their ticket to citizenship and successful careers.
