My students tend to wander around the room when they are tired of sitting in their desk chairs. By providing an alternative space in which my nomads can work they are able to switch up their seating without disturbing others in the classroom. Many of my classes need extrinsic motivation to stay on task and a flexible seating area could be used as a reward for those students! Research has shown that alternative or flexible seating is good for blood circulation in students and improves posture along with academic performance. Students will also be able to work collaboratively and share in order to decide when to trade seats with other students. The classroom also has four sink/countertop areas that no longer function but are attached to the floor in odd places. Unfortunately, I can't seat students in an ideally collaborative way, and my seating arrangements are limited because of large class sizes. By having an area for flexible seating students will be able to work together more easily than they would in their desks and I have extra seating for my larger classes.
