I can't wait to get this book in my student's hands. Fifth graders are in a tough spot when it comes to reading. They still have that love for picture books, but at the same know they are expected to reach for more advanced books. Not all of them are interested in reading a chapter book though. That is why graphic novels have become such a popular item. The Invention of Hugo Cabret will help spark that love of reading for years to come in my classroom! It is the perfect book to transition a student to chapter books . At first glance, it can be intimidating. At 530 pages, it is enough to scare any reader away, let alone a fifth grader. However, once the cover is opened, you can't put it down. It is a perfect blend between a novel and a picture book. You start reading the text, then you are thrust into scene made of 42 illustrations. It almost feels like a silent film. This pattern continues throughout the entire book. With a blend of words and illustrations, the reader is given an amazing story. My students will use this book in a unit long book study. We will use this book to study our typical learning targets like text structure, author's purpose, compare/contrast, figurative language, author's craft, plot, characters, theme, setting, and conflict, along with a many more. On top of our normal curriculum, students will be given the opportunity to take a look at early movie making using the historical piece of the book.
