Technology in an essential tool in every 21st century classroom. Unfortunately, it is taking time for our budgets to keep pace with the potential growth technology can provide. In addition to the embedded graphics in the apps we use and translator programs available on the internet, technology is like a universal language that all children speak. In a classroom of English language learners, technology also serves as a communication tool. I have watched the shyest newcomers to our class put aside all fears and take great academic risks when the ipads were pulled out in our media center. As the students engage with the technology and each other, barriers of not knowing English are removed. Having a set of iPads for my classes will multiply the number of voice and choice opportunities I can provide my students. Students will be able to choose the apps most appropriate for their learning goals and to track their progress in real time. We use OneNote and having multiple devices will allow greater access for students. I am most excited about the opportunities for student interaction through flipgrid and nearpod lessons. The iPads are also a tool to help the students gain confidence in the general education classroom. English learners are often assisted by their English speaking peers. When English learners use their ipads to share apps, create visuals, or to present their learning they have the opportunity to return the favor and assist peers who have helped them bringing balance to their relationships.
