These graphic novels introduce important literacy skills such as interpreting visual cues, understanding character emotions through artwork, and following non-linear storylines. During our recent lesson on graphic novels, students learned how to distinguish graphic novels from traditional chapter books by analyzing panel layouts, speech bubbles, and visual storytelling. These new additions have given students the opportunity to practice these skills in an engaging, accessible format.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been immediate and joyful—students are excited to walk into the library and see the expanded series. Second graders have especially gravitated toward the Baby-sitters Little Sisters series, often discussing their favorite characters and sharing books with friends. Third graders are devouring the Cupcake Diaries, using the stories to talk about friendship and real-life situations. The availability of more books in each series means that more students can read together, exchange recommendations, and build a sense of community around reading. The enthusiasm and collaboration among students show just how meaningful these donations are in fostering a love of reading and learning.","fullyFundedDate":1764731671095,"projectUrl":"project/graphic-friendships/9673753/","projectTitle":"Graphic Friendships","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ragghianti","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9275561_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x0,y240&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756814203824","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9275561"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_98186","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":433,"numTeachers":48,"percentFrplEligible":85,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":48,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"9.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":48.6,"schoolId":98186,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ison Springs Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Ison Springs Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/fulton-county-school-district/ison-springs-elementary-school/98186"}
