As a teacher, I love hearing students sharing their new favorite song, arguing sports statistics, or discussing celebrity gossip. These informal conversations, debates, and music reviews showcase their creativity and critical thinking outside the classroom...but these are the same skills that teachers seek to help students develop in their lessons every day. So a team of students have been working to start a student-run school radio station to celebrate these natural abilities! Starting a student-led school radio station will give my students the opportunity to showcase their organic skills and creativity, while also helping them to develop important 21st century job skills in media and technology. Our student team has researched the list of equipment we are hoping to fundraise, and will learn how to put it all together to set up a basic sound studio. They are learning media recording and editing skills to create radio programs, and the communications and new media skills to advertise and share what they produce. They are practicing their leadership as they navigate the complexities of starting a student-run program, and building their storytelling and public speaking abilities as they learn what it actually takes to be a voice on the radio. And they are developing valuable professional skills by visiting and communicating with professional radio DJs and musicians (including our visit to the sports radio station "97.5 FM The Fanatic", pictured above). Our team is excited to create a student radio station that can give our student body the opportunity to celebrate the full diversity of their skills, interests, and opinions!
