Children crave screen time, so why not strive to make it engaging AND educational. I am on a quest to explore the most effective ways to implement blended learning into our routine. Earlier this year we launched our first website in an effort to help parents gain a better understanding of what goes on in our classroom. Some of the website's features include: student-created videos, exemplary work, and a blog where students, parents and teachers can all "fill each other's buckets" with "shout out's." The website has been well received, but it is time to raise the bar! I plan to utilize our new technology on designated days each month, to give parents and students the opportunity to exchange their knowledge and unique talents via virtual classrooms and field trips. Placing this new technology directly in students’ hands will help bring this old adage to fruition: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn” (Benjamin Franklin). The Chromebooks will help take the students’ learning experiences outside of the four walls of our classroom while at the same time, bring the parents into our dynamic learning environment. It is my goal to provide tangible learning experiences between students and their parents on a regular basis. Not only will the new technology make it possible for students to utilize the digital learning programs that our school has subscribed to. It will also enable students to unleash their creative side as they utilize the new Chromebooks to deliver their very own lessons and presentations. Parents in turn will be invited to share their expertise with us as we take virtual field trips and learn more about their careers, talents and rich family histories.
