I always believe that we educators should teach our students the best that we can, also so with the best that we can find. With a functional spectrophotometer, I can envision then I can teach my students have matter interact with electromagnetic wave, the fundamental principle of spectroscopy. There were so many experiments we can do, besides fulfilling the college board AP curriculum, such as measuring Keqm constant and binding constant of complexes and reaction rate. Outside class room, we can also conduct research such as monitoring possible heavy metal contamination in our school or community. I am sure all my students will benefit from having and learning how to use a spectrophotometer. When my schools told me again and again that 'we don't have the funding to purchase one, I used to think it is the way it is in NYC public schools. We are all equally underfunded. Not until recently at one of the PD meeting in NYC, I learnt that my is the only AP Chemistry teacher among 15 schools, who is in such shortage. Some teachers even have 4 for their class with less that 25 students. I was shocked and awaken. I have asked my supervisor again for one again. The answer is the same with a little variation 'we have to fund the project of high priority first.' I am frustrated and my students are still short-changed. Please help if you can.
