My students come to school hopeful about learning but often find that resources such as books, materials, sports, clubs, support services, etc., are limited. Sadly, they have also seen their teachers and mentors come and go at a large scale throughout their years in a enormous school system rife with closings and turn-overs. Nonetheless, our school and our classrooms are magical places in their lives. My Spanish class, while full of rich language experiences, needs books. We need fiction and non fiction. But we especially need high-interest, young adult fiction in Spanish. Language acquisition researcher Stephen Krashen said, "Reading for pleasure is the source of most of our literate competence." I strive to optimize acquisition by increasing my students' exposure to and stamina in pleasure reading.
