The purchase of these books will provide students with an opportunity to work with a text that they can relate to and make connections to an important concept in everyday life. This text will not only provide students with the necessary reading skills but also allow them to make real-life connections to what it means to strive in the face of adversity. Providing students with a text that is high interest but also high rigor will help them to succeed in more ways than one. The text is based in a context that is far removed from the lives of my students live (the southside of Chicago in the 1950's); however, through the theme and the conflicts of the story, my students will be able to see their own challenges and develop an idea of how their own dreams will manifest.
