Students who are excited about reading, who also have high quality, engaging books at their fingertips daily, will grow and develop as readers. Students with increased opportunities to read will build their stamina for reading and develop a daily habit and lifelong love of reading. The purpose of this project is to create a community of students that can understand diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism through age-appropriate books. I want my students to see themselves and their friends in our books and learn about anti-racism. Children bring their own set of culturally-based expectations, skills, talents, abilities, and values with them into the classroom. And they begin to develop their self-concept (at least in part) from how others see them. If the classroom doesn’t reflect and validate their families and cultures, children may feel invisible, unimportant, incompetent, and ashamed of who they are. Having access to these books will help my students develop a strong understanding of culture and diversity and most importantly about acceptance. As with any task, the learner must be motivated in order to be successful. Having a classroom library with books focusing on acceptance, inclusion and social justice will help me expose my students to their classmates’ customs and varied ethnic cultures. I believe it is necessary to have books that reflect and honor all the students at our school. Our classroom libraries should reflect our school’s diverse student demographics.
