My students will have the opportunity to read the book Wonder in both English and Spanish. The story is about a ten-year-old boy named August who has a facial deformity. August faces challenges when he attends school for the first time. The story touches on ideas that students can relate to such as facing adversity in a school setting, interactions with parents and friends, and the acceptance of others. I chose this story to teach my students about the importance of compassion and kindness towards others. As my students move on to middle school, they will be able to take with them lessons learned through reading this novel. More importantly, my students will be able to celebrate each other's differences and embrace who they are as human beings.
