As part of a larger semester-long comparative anatomical analysis project, I would like to give my students the opportunity to observe the major differences and similarities between broad animal groups. The project will start with invertebrates and move toward more advanced animals such as birds and mammals. The grasshopper is an excellent representative of the invertebrate lineage, as well as the incredibly diverse insect family. We need grasshopper dissection kits. Students will use these dissection kits to methodically investigate the anatomy of the insect, honing their understanding of invertebrate anatomy. They will later synthesize this information into a comparison of insects, starfish, sharks, frogs, mammals, and pigeons. This will both give them a better understanding of the relatedness between major animal groups, but it will also give them hands-on experience in laboratory work that will benefit them in college and beyond.
