A classroom MakerSpace will provide my students with hands-on learning opportunities. Students retain about 20% of information in a passive learning environment. When they are engaged in active learning and given an opportunity to practice what they have just learned, that percentage increases to 75%. A MakerSpace in my classroom will provide hands-on resources with research-based content. Student will be creating new ways to fill gaps in our curriculum. A MakerSpace in my classroom will provide open-ended exploration that fosters creativity and innovation with the Engineering Design Process. This will be a designated area that allows students to design, build, and tinker using a variety of STEM materials. The cart is filled with engaging activities and a variety of materials to meet all the students’ needs. A MakerSpace empowers student curiosity and creativity, increases retention, and actively engages students. It actively fosters independent and creative problem solving, encourages collaboration, builds confidence in personal skills and knowledge, and is adaptive and inclusive for all learning styles. MakerSpace activities support social emotional learning. Students identify problems specific to themselves or the broader community, they practice working with others, and practice empathy and respect working in a collaborative setting. Students learn to manage viewpoints and preferences of other students, participate in productive struggle throughout their design process, and develop a growth mindset as they improve and reinvent designs.
