In past years, I have tried various strategies to increase student engagement but something was missing: the students. Whiteboarding is an innovative strategy in which whiteboards are installed around the classroom, ideally on all four walls. Students stand at the whiteboards and work independently or in small groups with rich learning opportunities that lead to deeper and more permanent understanding. Students become more engaged with the work as the learning is transferred from the teacher demonstrating to the students being actively involved with relevant tasks. In a whiteboard classroom, the teacher becomes the facilitator, while students interact with the material and collaborate with classmates. An added benefit to this is the reduction of down-time that struggling students need to wait for assistance while the teacher is helping other students. Students are able to see the work of other groups which lets them see other ways to solve problems and allows the teacher to quickly and easily provide leading questions and/or feedback. A whiteboard classroom can positively impact the culture of learning while working to develop 21st Century skills by increasing collaboration, communication and critical thinking. In schools that have created whiteboard classrooms, there have been positive changes with the culture. Student time on task and eagerness to start increased. More students are participating and mathematical discourse increased. Students are more likely to persevere with difficult tasks when working collaboratively. The reliance on the teacher for correct answers is reduced. Students become more enthusiastic about math, class and there is an elimination of social barriers within the classroom.
