This year, we are focusing on learning language and literacy skills through novel studies. Allowing my students to journey through fictional worlds while acquiring new vocabulary and building background knowledge will lead them on a path to success. In fourth grade, we transition from learning how to read to reading to learn new information. Through these novels, I will be able to teach to the rigor of the standards while creating a love of literacy. My students will be able to participate in an author study to see how an author uses his/her craft to take us on a journey through fictional worlds. The use of novels in print may seem old fashioned to some but the students I service will benefit most from the hands on experiences of holding a book and turning pages. As they acquire new language and vocabulary, they can use the books as a tool to literally turn the page on a new world of adventures.
