Every child needs access to a book. The students at my school need to read more, so that they will be better speakers, writers, and be able to redesignate before they reach high school. Most students I teach are Long Term English Learners and are still developing their language skills. Two of my three seventh grade classes are at an average reading level of 3rd grade. I need to desperately encourage reading by not only assigning reading logs, but by providing them with a classroom library. I think that once the students see books they can "check out" at their fingertips, then they will more likely want to partake in the process of reading. If I can provide students with a non-threatening reading environment in the classroom, and reward students with reading time, then students might change their preconceived notions about reading. This is my hope for my future 8th graders. I want them to feel comfortable picking up a book, and I want them to feel a sense of accomplishment once they complete it. If my students learn to enjoy reading, then their future high school and college years will be much smoother.
