I am requesting the book Heroes of Black History to give my students the opportunity to learn how ordinary people can make a difference in their lives and others' lives. These books will allow our students to learn about Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson and Harriet Tubman. These people have helped bring about significant changes to our world because they had the courage to stand up for change. These books will be used in Literature Circles so that children could discuss and write about how these people were able to help make changes in out world today. A literature circle is a group of students who are reading the same book, who come together to discuss what they are reading. Each person in the group is expected to read the chosen book and participate in book discussions, a book presentation and book projects. By working in these small groups it improves their understanding of the book's content. Your help will ensure that my students will be exposed to literature circles and the benefits of working as a team. They will learn the joy of reading and sharing what they read with others. These books will ensure that the children will have the opportunity to learn and interpret literary works.
